If one has to trade full time, you need a daily routine.
A routine is some sort of a structure within which you need to function.
Mostly it would revolve around the markets in which you trade.
According to ancient Indian Tradition, a Great Yogi really gave a lot of priority to repetition.
And that too disciplined repetition.
Yogi’s would spend days in a period they called sadhana (loosely translates to intense practise). It really depended on what they were trying to achieve but say it was meditation, they would work up their meditation practice to even 18-20 hours a day, sleeping and eating very little.
And they could do this for months at a time.
They believed and utilized the potential memory of the human body cells even thousands of years ago.
This constant repetition enabled their minds and bodies to break all barriers, and expand their perception and it enabled them to achieve their goals.
To truly achieve something one needs to have a fierce attitude like a conqueror.
Alexander the Great didn’t conquer the world by sitting around and not having a meticulous plan, and following through with it.
You need to have goals that have a deadline. You need a plan to meet that deadline. You need consistent action to follow that plan. This is an important recipe for success.
For a full-time trader, we don’t need 18 hours of meditation or a plan of world conquest, but we do have goals.
Our goals are to have consistency and to be able to follow our system with emotional self-discipline.
To make our minds emotionally stable we must cultivate a very happy and stress-free life for ourselves.
We cannot be at peak performance if we are stressed or depressed.
A routine doesn’t mean you need to necessarily wake up at 4 in the morning and have a cold water shower(though that is scientifically proven to really help the human body and mind), but it means your body and mind need to fit and settle into some kind of rhythm so that through the sheer repetition of your rhythm you are able to channelize and rationalize your thoughts and logic and implement it in the best way possible.
We don’t need to define an ideal routine as everyone is different, trading different markets and has very different rhythms.
But we will recommend 5 things that will really help you, as a trader if you include them in your everyday routine.

A strong daily routine starts with a good diet
An healthy daily routine suggests a Good Sleep
Today, researchers are more deeply probing the cellular and subcellular effects of disrupted sleep, as well as the effects of sleep deprivation on metabolism, hormone regulation, and gene expression.
Newer studies are strengthening known and suspected relationships between inadequate sleep and a wide range of disorders, including hypertension, impaired immune functioning, cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, neurodegeneration, and even loneliness.
Nature tends to be very parsimonious in that it often uses a single system or biology in multiple ways to optimize the functioning of an organism.
We know, for example, that sleep is critical for waking cognition—that is, for the ability to think clearly, to be vigilant and alert, and sustain attention.
We also know that memories are consolidated during sleep, and that sleep serves a key role in emotional regulation.
More than anything, this is the key point of value for traders who want to be in the optimal state of mind while trading.
How much sleep is enough?
After decades of investigation, it appears that scientists have gathered enough evidence to begin to answer that question.
When duration of sleep drops below seven hours, and especially when it starts to move toward six and half hours or less, a number of different disorders begin to increase in prevalence.
Most experts would agree that there is a kind of sweet spot that most people should aim for, and for the average healthy adult that zone is ideally somewhere between 7 and 7 and a half hours.
That is what the consensus evaluations of more than a thousand scientific articles have yielded.
Here’s a few tips that can help you get a good night’s sleep.
- Stick to a sleep schedule, even on weekends.
- Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual.
- Exercise daily.
- Evaluate your bedroom to ensure ideal temperature, sound and light.
- Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillows.
- Switch off your electronics.
- Set an alarm to go to bed at the same time every day.
If you are always in a state of stress good sleep is much harder to attain.
Our next must have activity in your routine can help you in this.
Meditation to clear and quieten the mind
We cannot stress enough on the importance of including meditation in your daily routine.
It is one of the most under-rated tools that a trader can possess in his/her tool belt.
Mind you that this does not come easy but no good things were ever easy to attain.
If you are here and are striving to become a full time trader then we assume you are willing to work hard to do it.
There are many benefits of meditation.
Here’s 2 articles that we previously wrote which have a more in-depth analysis on how Meditation can help you improve your trading:
Meditation is proven to:
- affect positively the brain structure,
- regulate blood pressure and the heart,
- slow rate of cellular aging,
- stimulate the immune system,
- increase gyrificationwhich allows the brain to process information faster,
- improve focusby stimulating regions of brain responsible of attention,
- regulate the mood by boosting dopamine and serotonine,
- reduce stressby downregulating pulse rate, blood pressure, and metabolism.
We remind you that as a trader if you don’t know your strengths and weaknesses and cannot play according to them, your learning curve to adjust to being full time will be much longer.
Connection with nature
We are living in a completely digitized world.
Many of us have more friends on the internet than we do in real life.
Our constant engagement with digital interfaces, disconnects us with the reality that we actually live in.
We recommend some habits like growing your own plants and keeping them in your work environment, a walk in the park, playing a sport, running in a park or field, simply sitting in your garden on the grass or walking on it barefoot.
These are some activities that will help to ground you and reconnect you to your inherent nature.
Nature is a great tool to help us relax and feel emotionally stable..
In a fast paced trading environment and constant interaction with machines and AI this can have a calming effect on your mind and body.
Research indicates that grounding the body generates broad, beneficial, and significant physiological changes.
The source of these effects is believed to be the mobile electrons omnipresent on the surface of Earth, which are responsible for the planet’s negative charge.
Lifestyle changes have disconnected most humans from this primordial health and healing resource, creating what may be an unrecognized electron deficiency in the body.
When Earth connection is restored through grounding, electrons flood throughout the body, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress while also reinforcing the body’s own defense mechanisms.
And of course taking a break from sitting in front of the screen is an added benefit.
Tip: Get a standing desk for trading so you can avoid the drawbacks of sitting for multiple hours.
